Five lakh Govt employees found abusing ‘Mukhyamantri Majhi Ladki Bahin’ scheme

  • Names of 81 lakh ineligible beneficiaries removed after e-KYC verification

  • Order issued to recover the money from the offenders

(e-KYC refers to electronic Know Your Customer verification)

Mumbai (Maharashtra) – Following e-KYC verification, 5 lakh government employees are improperly availing benefits under the ‘Mukhyamantri Majhi Ladki Bahin’ scheme. Their names have now been removed from the scheme. The responsibility for recovering the money allegedly obtained fraudulently by these employees has been assigned to the respective government departments. The Women and Child Development Department has forwarded the names of these employees to the concerned departments.

Along with government employees, another 81 lakh individuals were found to have improperly availed benefits under the scheme. Since the launch of the ‘Mukhyamantri Majhi Ladki Bahin’ scheme in July 2024, a maximum of 2.47 crore people received benefits. After it was discovered that some government employees and other ineligible people were availing benefits, e-KYC verification of beneficiaries was initiated. Following the verification process, as of June 2026, 1.66 crore people continue to receive benefits under the scheme.

More than ₹1,200 crore was embezzled through false information

Government employees and others obtained more than ₹1,200 crore from the scheme by providing false information. Although 30 May was the deadline for e-KYC verification, officials from the Women and Child Development Department said that efforts to identify additional beneficiaries who secured benefits through false declarations would continue even after that date.

Money to be recovered from male beneficiaries who improperly availed benefits: Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis

Despite continuous follow-up over the past nine months, lakhs of beneficiaries under the ‘Mukhyamantri Majhi Ladki Bahin’ scheme have still not completed e-KYC verification. It is suspected that some may be avoiding verification because they do not meet the eligibility criteria. Consequently, payments to those who have not completed e-KYC will be withheld.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis informed media representatives that money already disbursed to ineligible female beneficiaries would not be recovered. However, funds would be recovered from the 14,000 men who availed benefits under the scheme.

Recommendation for action against men who improperly availed benefits: Women and Child Development Department

As many as 14,000 men in the State are reported to have improperly availed benefits under the scheme by falsely declaring themselves as women. While Chief Minister Fadnavis stated that the money would be recovered from such individuals, he did not comment on any punitive action against them. When asked by a representative of Sanatan Prabhat, officials of the Women and Child Development Department stated that they would write to the Chief Minister seeking strict action in the matter.

The amount obtained by these 14,000 men under the ‘Mukhyamantri Majhi Ladki Bahin’ scheme exceeds ₹30 crore. Although the money is to be recovered, they are accused of deliberately misrepresenting themselves as women and thereby openly defrauding the Government. Therefore, it is expected that action should also be taken against them. While the Women and Child Development Department intends to recommend action, the final decision will rest with the Chief Minister.

Editorial Perspective

Why is the Women and Child Development Department silent on the fact that the Government has decided not to take action against women who allegedly obtained money through false information? If there is a distinction between male and female offenders, how can that be considered equality?
