‘Legalising Illicit Liquor Production Will Generate Revenue for the Government’

Legalising Illicit Liquor Production -Ramdas Athawale

Bhiwandi – Thousands of people have died so far by consuming illicit liquor. Recently, around 18-19 people died in Pune, Pimpri-Chinchwad. Laborers work hard and take care of their families. They consume illicit liquor during stressful times. Illicit distilleries continue despite repeat police raids. If an Illicit distillery is stopped in one lane, bottles are available in the next lane; therefore, such production never stops. Instead, legalise such liquor production; It will generate revenue for the Government and help save the lives of poor people. Union Minister Ramdas Athawale made this suggestion to the Government while speaking to reporters in Bhiwandi.

‘For how long will you allow consumption of poisonous liquor? Lift the of ban on liquor in Gadchiroli district’ NCP leader Dharmarao Baba Atram has demanded. He also said that he would be meeting the State Chief Minister, Devendra Fadanvis, regarding this demand. (If the liquor ban is lifted, it would amount to abandoning the policy and principles on which prohibition was imposed in the area. – Editor) He also said, “Legalise liquor made from Mahua flowers. Tribals consume liquor made from Mahua flowers during occasions such as births, marriages, deaths and other traditional ceremonies”.

Editorial Perspective

  • Making such a demand solely for gaining revenue without giving a thought to people's health is highly inappropriate. Such demands are like 'the cure being worse than the disease'. Who will take responsibility if this leads to increased addiction and harms the health of citizens ? Why do leaders not think about this?
  • We need governments that provide what people genuinely need, not what may be harmful to them.
