Six Muslim youths arrested after opposition to attempts to suppress the incident
Chittagong (Bangladesh) – At a Durga Puja Pandal, a group of Islamic extremists, under the guise of performing patriotic songs, took to the stage and sang a song calling for an “Islamic revolution.” The lyrics included references to establishing an Islamic revolution in Bangladesh and targeting non-Muslims. After the incident came to light, the Bangladeshi authorities initially attempted to suppress it, as they often do. However, when a video of the event went viral on social media, exposing the truth, the local administration was forced to take action. Six youths were arrested following the event, which took place on 9thOctober.

1. Some youths, posing as members of the local cultural organisation “Chittagong Cultural Academy,” requested permission from the organisers to perform patriotic songs. Without suspicion, the organisers granted permission, but these extremists started singing about Islamic revolution on stage, creating tension at the event. Hindus present at the scene felt disturbed by this act. After the incident, the video quickly went viral on social media, although some people tried to dismiss it as “fake” or “edited.” However, local journalists and social activists confirmed the authenticity of the event and condemned efforts to falsify the facts.

2. Qadaruddin Shishir, a journalist with AFP, confirmed via social media that the video was genuine and that the incident had indeed occurred. He suggested that the cultural group involved might have ties to Jamaat-e-Islami.
3. Following the incident, Chittagong’s Deputy Commissioner, Farida Khanam, visited the scene, assessed the situation, and assured that the matter would be investigated thoroughly and the culprits punished. She stressed that such incidents harm Bangladesh’s religious harmony and would not be tolerated. She also emphasised that the administration would work to maintain religious harmony during events like Durga Puja.
4. Some individuals accused Sajal Dutta, the Assistant Secretary of the Puja Pandal, of allowing the group to perform Islamic songs on stage. As the news spread, the organisers announced that Sajal Dutta had been removed from the Puja Festival Committee. The organisers, on the other hand, claimed they were unaware of the incident and had been misled.
