Doubt expressed by the Chairman of the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR)
Shillong (Meghalaya) – Priyank Kanoongo, the Chairman of NCPCR, recently visited Meghalaya. Incidents of attack and gang-rape were reported in the South-West Garo Hills region in the Ampati District of the State during a tribal festival. Many complaints were received regarding those incidents. This region is on the border of Bangladesh; therefore, Kanoongo personally went there to investigate. After investigations, Kanoongo expressed his doubt about Rohingya intruders being the attackers.
Kanoongo met the victims and their family members and promised them that the criminals involved in the case would be severely punished. Not a single offender would be spared. He added that a policy will be formed at the national and State level to prevent such incidents in the future.

The Government must employ all possible means to protect children, insists Priyank Kanoongo, the NCPCR chairmanUpon being contacted by the assistant editor of ‘Sanatan Prabhat’, Priyank Kanoongo said that according to the information provided by the victims, Rohingyas are involved in this abhorrent crime. He stressed that the Government should not protect children only by the implementation of the National Register of Citizens (NRC), but leave no stone unturned to ascertain their safety. |
Editorial Perspective
The involvement of Bangladeshis or Rohingya Muslims in heinous crimes such as rapes and terrorist attacks in India has been documented numerous times. The Government should not delay any further in implementing the NRC and must decisively expel these intruders. |
