Child marriages lead to 28,657 teenage pregnancies in Karnataka

Bengaluru (Karnataka) – Several illegal cases of prenatal sex determination and feticide are coming to light in the State. The number of cases of child marriage and teenage pregnancy are also increasing. The State Government has decided to strictly follow the law to prevent child marriages. However, information from the department of ‘Women and Child Development’ has revealed that 28,657 teenage pregnancies have been recorded in the State last year.

921 teenage girls are pregnant in Yadgir District and more than 300 teenage girls are pregnant in Surapura taluka alone. It has become clear that child marriages are not being prevented in Yadgir District. They are taking place by escaping the eyes of the ‘Women and Child Development’ department and the ‘Commission for Protection of Child Rights’.
