Uttarakhand Chief minister, Pushkar Singh Dhami

Dehradun (Uttarakhand) – The promise of a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) made by the BJP in Uttarakhand before the elections seems to be coming true. After getting elected as Chief Minister, Pushkar Singh Dhami set up a committee in May 2022, under the chairmanship of Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai and directed it to submit a report on the implementation of UCC in the State. A detailed report will be submitted next month. “Based on the report, action will be taken in the next month itself. We are also planning to call a special Assembly Session in this regard”, said Dhami in an interview.

Estimated 2,50,000 suggestions received

Chief Minister Dhami further said that the UCC has existed in Goa since pre-independence. Uttarakhand would be the first State in independent India to implement it. An expert committee worked on the draft UCC. All the complexities have been taken into consideration while drafting the code. The people have given us a mandate based on our promise of a UCC. The committee visited various places and interacted with thousands of people across the classes, religions and political parties. An estimated 2,50,000 suggestions were received from various sources. Based on those, the final report has been created.

Editorial Perspective

In secular India, no Indian State passed such a law in the past 75 years. This is disgraceful for a secular country !
