President Trump retains authority to veto the resolution

Washington DC (USA) – A resolution aimed at stopping the war against Iran has been passed by the US House of Representatives. The measure was approved by a vote of 215 to 208, with 215 members voting in favour and 208 against. According to reports, four Republican lawmakers broke ranks and voted alongside Democrats in support of ending the conflict. It has also been reported that President Donald Trump has the authority to veto the resolution and prevent it from taking effect.

1. The resolution states that unless Congress formally declares war or authorises the use of military force, President Trump must withdraw US military forces from Iran.
2. Representative Gregory Meeks, who introduced the War Powers Resolution, said in a statement that its passage sends an important message. According to him, an increasing number of Republican leaders are listening to their constituents, many of whom do not want another war in the Middle East.
