Rabat (Morocco) – On the night of 8th September, a powerful earthquake struck Morocco, registering 6.8 on the Richter Scale. According to media reports more than 800 individuals are dead with an additional 329 sustaining injuries. According to data from the US Geological Survey, the earthquake’s epicentre was situated 71 kilometres south-west of the renowned tourist destination Marrakesh, at a depth of 18.5 kilometres. The tremors were experienced at around 11:11 p.m. local time, followed by subsequent aftershocks measuring 4.9 in magnitude in the affected regions.

PM Modi offers condolences
Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted about the earthquake in Morocco and said that, “Extremely pained by the loss of lives due to an earthquake in Morocco. In this tragic hour, my thoughts are with the people of Morocco. Condolences to those who have lost their loved ones. May the injured recover at the earliest. India is ready to offer all possible assistance to Morocco in this difficult time.”
