Tirumala – The appointment of a Christian as chairman of Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam trust, managing country’s richest temple, has sparked controversy. MLA Karunakar Reddy, a staunch supporter of Andhra Pradesh’s Christian Chief Minister Jagan Mohan Reddy’s family, has been appointed as chairman of the TTD board. Karunakar Reddy’s family follows Christianity. Telugu Desam Party, BJP and many other opposition parties have raised questions on this decision of Andhra Pradesh Government. Buchi Ram Prasad, state secretary of Telugu Desam Party, asked, “how can someone who does not have any faith in Hindu Dharma be made the chairman ?”. BJP’s State President D. Purandeswari said, “only a person who believes in Hindu Dharma should be appointed to this post”. She said it was unfortunate to use the post of temple chairman for political gains. BJP leader and former chief secretary Krishna Rao also criticised the Government’s decision. He was earlier working as Executive Officer of TTD trust.
