Mumbai, 11th July – As per the information obtained, the Anti-Corruption Bureau’s (ACB) operations have resulted in the release of 94.11% of the accused in the last nine years. ACB registered 8,512 cases from 2014 to 2022. Out of which, in 502 cases the offence has been proved, that is, only 5.89%. Out of 8,512 cases, chargesheets have been filed in 7,148 cases, that is, the ACB did not file chargesheets in 17% of cases. It may be mentioned here that among the offenders against whom action was taken by ACB, there were a majority of elected representatives and employees from various Government Departments. Almost 85% of the people, who were caught while accepting bribes were reinstated to Government service. In the current year, 466 cases of corruption have been registered till 9th July 2023. Among them, there are 653 accused, but considering the performance of the last nine years, there is no guarantee of the accused getting any sentence.

There are many reasons for crimes not getting proven ! – ACB officer

A representative of ‘Dainik Sanatan Prabhat’ met a senior officer of ACB at its head office in Worli (Mumbai) and asked him about the low number of proving cases. He said that there were various reasons such as – the situation while taking a bribe, the accused accepting bribe through another person, the accused not accepting bribes openly in the offices, and difficulty in collecting evidence, etc. (Corrupt culprits are smarter than the laws ! – Editor) Another senior officer said such information can be disclosed only with the permission of Director General of Police and avoided giving an answer.

Editorial Viewpoint

  • It shows why corruption is not eliminated.
  • If patriotic citizens are under the impression that one corrupt person is punished after a raid by the Anti-Corruption Bureau, the above statistics will clear up such misunderstanding. If individuals nabbed for corruption are released despite cases registered against them, investigations should be conducted against the concerned ACB officers.
