Tradition of Quran recitation at Rathosava of world-famous Chennakeshava Temple stopped

Hassan (Karnataka) – At the world-famous Chennakeshava Temple, the ill practice of reciting the Quran at the beginning of the Rathotsava was continuing for many years. However, Pro-Hindu organisations, including the Hindu Janajagruti Samiti, opposed it, hence, the Charity Commissioner ordered that ‘Quran should not be recited’. As a result, the Quran was not recited at the beginning of this year’s Rathotsava on 4th April.

1. It has been ordered by the Charity Commissioner not to recite the Quran in front of the chariot on the morning of 4th April during Rathotsava. Meduru’s Qazis (judges who give judgments according to the Muslim scriptures) should only accept honour. In accordance with the order, the Qazi prayed to Channakeshva by the wall near the shrine.

2. Chairman of the Management Committee of the Temple Dr Narayan Swamy said, “The Qazis have given in writing that they will not recite the Quran. After praying to Channakeshva, the Qazi was escorted safely into the vehicle by security personnel.”

3. Some years ago, the ill practice of starting the Rathotsava after reciting the Quran in front of the chariot was instilled. After protests and agitations by pro-Hindu organisations, the State Charitable Department summoned Pandits and collected information about this. Pandits said, ‘Quran cannot be recited in front of the chariot of the temple’.

4. More than 400 Police and paramilitary personnel were deployed at the Rathotsava venue after the Commissioner of Charity Department passed the relevant order.
