New Delhi – Delhi Court has framed sedition charges against JNU student Sharjeel Imam for allegedly making provocative speeches during the protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and NRC. The Court has framed the charges under IPC sections 124A (sedition), 153A (promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, etc), 153B (imputations, assertions prejudicial to national integration), 505 (statements conducing to public mischief) along with Section 13 (punishment for unlawful activities) of the UAPA.

Sharjeel Imam had delivered the speeches on the premises of Jamia Millia Islamia University on 13th December 2019 and Aligarh Muslim University on 16th December 2019. In his speeches, he had threatened to cut off Assam and the rest of the north-eastern States from India. Violent riots have been reported following the Imam’s speech. Sharjeel has been in judicial custody since January 2020. The Delhi Police had filed a chargesheet against him in the case.
