Dhaka (Bangladesh) – The U.S. military has commenced a joint military exercise with the Bangladesh Army in Sylhet, Bangladesh, which is located extremely close to India’s border. Both countries have stated that the joint military exercise has been launched to strengthen the strategic partnership between Bangladesh and the United States and enhance cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region. According to information provided by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) of the Bangladesh Armed Forces, the 13-day exercise began on 19th July and will conclude on 31st July. The exercise is being conducted under the supervision of the Bangladesh Army’s special unit, the ‘Para Commando Brigade’.
Bangladesh has launched the 13-day 'Tiger Lightning' joint military exercise with U.S. troops in Sylhet, just miles from India's border.
By trying to grow closer to both the U.S. and China despite their strategic rivalry, Bangladesh risks undermining its own interests.

Sylhet region is extremely sensitive for India
The Sylhet region lies immediately adjacent to the international border of India’s northeastern states, particularly Meghalaya and Assam. In such a situation, the presence of U.S. troops near India’s border and the specialised ‘Jungle Operations Training’ have put security agencies on alert. Sylhet is extremely important from the perspective of the security of northeastern India and geopolitical stability.
