Court refuses urgent hearing, says, ‘Do not drag the judiciary into this’

Petition filed in Delhi High Court against police action during ‘Cockroach Janata Party’s’ violent march

New Delhi – The ‘Cockroach Janata Party’ had taken out a march from Jantar Mantar towards Parliament on 20th July. Violence broke out during the march, following which the police resorted to a baton charge and fired tear gas shells to stop the march 100 metres from Parliament. More than 115 police personnel and activists were injured in the violence. A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) has been filed in the Delhi High Court against the baton charge. The Court refused to hear the matter urgently. Rejecting the demand for an urgent hearing, the Court said, ‘Do not drag the Court into all this. The petition will be taken up for hearing tomorrow.’

Police register 5 cases

The police have registered 5 cases in connection with the violence. Cases related to violence, stone-pelting and damage to public property have been registered at various police stations, including Connaught Place and Parliament Street. The police have stated that efforts are underway to identify the accused through CCTV footage and videos.
