Anti-India statement by the Home Minister of Bangladesh - Salahuddin Ahmed

Dhaka (Bangladesh) – No one will be allowed to enter Bangladesh illegally through ‘push-ins’. The Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), with the help of locals, has successfully thwarted all such attempts so far. A few people had entered the country illegally. Still, the authorities have taken action in those cases, Bangladesh Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed said after visiting the BGB headquarters at Pilkhana in Dhaka. He was referring to India’s crackdown on Bangladeshi illegal immigrants. India has intensified action against Bangladeshi illegal immigrants, sending them back across the border, while Border Guard Bangladesh is attempting to prevent their entry.

Bangladesh: India should provide us with a list
Home Minister Ahmed further stated that, instead of responding to the political moves of West Bengal’s newly elected Government, Bangladesh would discuss the matter with India’s Union Government. If any Bangladeshi nationals are residing in India, the Indian authorities should provide a list of them through the Ministry of External Affairs in accordance with the established procedure. We will verify their citizenship. If the individual’s Bangladeshi citizenship is verified, we will accept them back through the due legal process. However, we will not allow anyone to enter Bangladesh through any other means.
India’s Rebuttal: No action despite the list
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) recently stated that India has shared a list of more than 2,680 illegal Bangladeshi immigrants with Bangladesh. However, the Bangladeshi Government has yet to verify their identities. In many cases, the verification process has remained pending for more than five years. The MEA has urged Bangladesh to expedite the verification of their nationality so that the repatriation process can be completed smoothly under the existing bilateral agreements.
