Karnataka High Court stays case registered against person who protested against a murder

Congress Government had registered a case against the protester on the grounds that the Government's image had been tarnished

Bengaluru (Karnataka) – The Karnataka High Court criticised the Congress Government, stating that it was wrong to register a case against a person for posting a tweet protesting against a murder instead of taking strict action against the murderers. The Court further remarked that the State Government was creating anarchy by pursuing the person who had posted the tweet and stayed the case registered against him.

Law student Kiran Aradhya had posted on X regarding the murder of Lavanya, a young woman, in Bantwal in the State. The Karnataka Police registered cases against Kiran Aradhya at the High Grounds and Bantwal Police Stations, stating that his post was tarnishing the image of the Government. Kiran then filed a petition in the High Court seeking quashing of the cases. Justice M Nagaprasanna, sitting as a Single Bench, granted a stay on the cases.

In his post on X, Kiran Aradhya had shown a man wearing a wristwatch on his left hand and trousers ending above the ankles, and written, ‘A monster who killed a young woman at Bantwal bus stand.’
