‘Hindustan Unilever Limited’ ordered to pay ₹50,000 compensation to consumer

70g of powder in a 90g ‘Surf Excel’ packet !

Dehradun (Uttarakhand) – The Uttarakhand State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission found ‘Hindustan Unilever Limited’ guilty of selling a packet of detergent powder which had 90g printed on it but actually contained only 70g. The Commission ordered the company to pay the consumer ₹50,000 as compensation.

In September 2020, Dnyan Chandra Garg, a resident of Ramnagar in Nainital district, purchased a box of ‘Surf Excel EW’ for ₹512. When he weighed the packets in the box, he found that although 90g was printed on the packets, they actually contained only 70g of detergent. He first sent the company a legal notice regarding the cheating and later filed a complaint with the Nainital District Consumer Commission, seeking compensation of ₹1 lakh.

During the hearing before the District Commission, the sealed packet was weighed on an electronic weighing machine in the presence of the company’s advocate. It was found to weigh only 70g. The company’s advocate could not raise any objection to this fact.
