“We do not have time to watch videos of the lathi charge !”

Supreme Court rebukes lawyers during hearing on plea against lathi charge on violent protesters at Jantar Mantar

New Delhi – “Do not waste our time, and do not waste your own time. We have absolutely no interest in watching videos of the lathi charge. We simply do not have the time to sit and watch such videos,” the Supreme Court told the petitioners’ advocates during the hearing of a petition filed against the lathi charge on workers of the Cockroach Janata Party who had indulged in violence at Jantar Mantar.

After the Delhi High Court refused an urgent hearing on the plea against police action during the CJP protest, the Supreme Court has now also declined an urgent hearing.

CJI Surya Kant remarked, "We don't have time to watch videos."

During the hearing, the petitioners’ advocates told the Supreme Court that the students were protesting over several extremely important issues of public interest, including the NEET (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test) examination, reforms in the National Testing Agency (NTA) and question paper leaks. Interrupting the advocates, Chief Justice Surya Kant said, “Thank you very, very much !” The advocates then attempted to inform the Court that videos of alleged police excesses and the baton charge were available. In response, the Chief Justice said that the Court did not have time to watch the videos.

Earlier, the Delhi High Court had also refused to hear urgently a similar petition against the police action. The High Court had said, “Do not unnecessarily drag the Court into this entire matter.”
