Locals vandalise Assam Rifles camp to protest the unfortunate killing of 13 civilians in Nagaland

A large crowd of angry villagers marched to the Assam Rifles camp, burnt their vehicles 

Kohima (Nagaland) – On the evening of 4th December, 13 civilians were killed by Assam Rifles camp assuming them to be militants in Oting in Mon District. There are assumptions of the occurrence of more deaths. A large crowd of angry villagers set Assam Rifles camp’s vehicles on fire. A few young local villagers who were labourers were returning home after their work in a ‘Pickup mini truck’ were fired upon by security personnel. The Chief Minister of Nagaland, Neipheu Rio has appealed to the people to maintain peace. He assured the people saying that an investigating team had been given the task of making inquiries and strict action would be taken against those found guilty.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah, anguished over an unfortunate incident expressed his deepest condolences to the families of those who have lost their lives. Indian Army also has expressed their grief and has given the orders to probe into the unfortunate incident.

Security personnel were being alerted about militants’ likely attack in that area

Since Assam Rifles were being informed about militants of ‘N.S.C.N.’ were going to come there in a vehicle to attack, they had made all the required preparations to act. As per the information and the description of the car in which militants were to come, security personnel signalled them to stop the car; but they did not stop. Thereafter, the security personnel opened fire on them resulting in the deaths of poor innocent labourers.

In the conflict that was triggered after this sad incident with villagers, a soldier martyred

Receiving the news of this horrible incident, villagers rushed to the spot and they started snatching the weapons from the security personnel. According to reports, when they set their vehicle on fire later, the soldiers also fired to gain control over the situation, in which some civilians were killed. It is being said that a soldier also lost his life in this, but this news is not being supported as yet.

Home Minister Amit Shah was very much grieved at this unfortunate incident in Oting in Nagaland. He expressed his condolences to the grieving family of those who had been killed in this incident.

A high-level SIT constituted by the State Govt will thoroughly probe this incident to ensure justice to the bereaved families,” Shah tweeted. Assam Rifles comes under the ambit of the Union Home Ministry.
