Former Chief Minister of Karnataka Siddaramaiah

Kodagu (Karnataka) – A case has been registered against Former Chief Minister and current Leader of opposition Siddaramaiah for hurting religious sentiments.  He had earlier said that ‘Kodavas people eat beef’. (Kodavas are people who live in the Kodagu District of Karnataka.) A case has been registered in the Madikeri Police Station under CRPC Article 153A (Promoting enimity between different groups). The president of Western Ghats Protection Association, Ravi Kushalappa had lodged the complaint.

Kodavas worship the cow. Cow slaughter and consuming beef is banned in Kodagu region. This rule is in place since the British times. This being the case, the remark by Siddaramaiah has caused anguish to the Kodava community. They have demanded that Siddaramaiah  rescind  his statement and issue a public apology.

Justifying his stance, Siddaramaiah tweeted saying, his remarks have been misrepresented by the media. If the Kodava community has been hurt by this, I apologise. I am aware of of Kodava culture and I greatly respect it’. However the Kodava community is not satisfied with this and are insisting that Siddaramaiah should publicly apologise.
