Sonam Wangchuk ends hunger strike !

Decision taken after receiving 3 written assurances from the Government !

New Delhi – Social activist Sonam Wangchuk finally ended his hunger strike at 12.30 a.m. on July 24, the 26th day of his protest. Wangchuk said, “Union Ministers J P Nadda and Jitendra Singh, as well as senior leaders from Ladakh, had come to meet me. Discussions between the Government and me had been ongoing for the past 2 days. I had demanded written assurances from the Government. The Government gave written assurances regarding my demands. Therefore, I decided to end my hunger strike.”

3 key written assurances given by the Government !

Sonam Wangchuk said that the Government had accepted the following demands in writing –

1. No legal action will be taken and no criminal cases will be registered against students and young people who carried out a peaceful protest at Jantar Mantar or participated in the ‘Parliament March’ on July 20. (If they were not students and had engaged in violence, why should action not be taken against them ? Wangchuk, who invokes the Constitution, is himself undermining the Constitution by making such a demand ! – Editor)

2. The Government will provide appropriate compensation to the families of more than 20 students who lost their lives due to the question paper leak.

3. To prevent the recurrence of such incidents in the future, Parliament will hold a detailed discussion on the entire issue, reforms in the examination system and the Government’s accountability in the education sector.
