New Delhi – Expressing deep concern over the collapse of the joint family system, the Supreme Court criticised nuclear families for handing children gadgets instead of giving them quality time. The Court warned that mobile phones replacing parents is a societal misfortune that could prove disastrous, leaving future generations completely detached from the warmth of family relationships.
1. While analysing recent cases of partner homicides across the Nation—including the Sonam Raghuvanshi case—a bench comprising Justices M M Sundresh and P B Varale observed that these incidents are a disturbing reflection of a changing society.
2. Today’s generation may be highly intelligent, but they cannot cope with stress. Expressing concern, the Court noted that people today blindly rely on WhatsApp forwards, passing them off as real wisdom.
3. Echoing the Court’s apprehensions, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta submitted that excessive engagement with electronic gadgets has escalated into a societal issue. This trend, he noted, is diminishing trust in human relationships and leading to a widespread lack of tolerance.
Humans are becoming machines !
Sharing an observation from a recent restaurant visit, Justice Sundresh noted how a family gave their child a phone only to keep him occupied while they ate. Warning that this behaviour will only escalate, he said, ‘The joint family system is a massive asset, but people do not realise it. Happiness lies in human connection, not material things. We are converting ourselves into machines.’
