Ratnagiri – The historic ‘Savarkar Sadan’, the house of great freedom fighter Vinayak Damodar Savarkar, located in Dadar, Mumbai, is facing the threat of demolition by the ‘builder lobby’, in the name of redevelopment. In order to save this historic building from demolition and preserve it, the government should declare it a ‘National Memorial’, demanded the Hindu Janajagruti Samiti and like-minded organisations during a sit-in protest. The protest was held on May 28th at Jayastambh here. At this time, Pro-Savarkar people expressed their firm determination that ‘We will not allow Savarkar Sadan to be demolished in the name of redevelopment’. After this, a delegation of Pro-Savarkar supporters submitted a memorandum of demands to District Collector Manoj Jindal.

Why protect ‘Jinnah House’ and demolish Savarkar House ?: Govind Bhardwaj, District Coordinator, Hindu Janajagruti Samiti

Why protect ‘Jinnah House’ while ‘Savarkar Sadan’ faces demolition? The ‘Jinnah House’ in Mumbai, the residence of Mohammed Ali Jinnah, who was responsible for the partition of India and the slaughter of millions of Hindus, remains safe in independent India; but unfortunately, the residence of Swatantryaveer Savarkar, who sacrificed everything for a united India, is being demolished in the name of redevelopment. The Union government has purchased Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar’s house in London, paying crores of rupees, and a grand memorial is being constructed on the site of Indu Mill. On the same lines, the government should immediately acquire the ‘Savarkar Sadan’, where Swatantryaveer Savarkar lived for 4 decades (from 1928 to 1966). The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation had sent a recommendation to the Urban Development Department of the Maharashtra government in 2010 itself to include this building in the heritage list; however, the government has not taken a final decision on this in the last 15 years. Taking advantage of this delay, the ‘builder lobby’ is trying to take over the building.

Demands made in the memorandum

1. The government should take ownership of the ‘Savarkar Sadan’ building and establish a grand museum there housing Savarkar’s manuscripts and letters. It should also develop a research centre and a digital library there.

2. A decision should be taken by making provisions to allocate special funds for the conservation of this structure.

Otherwise, we will launch a statewide agitation in Maharashtra!

The Hindu Janajagruti Samiti warned that if the government does not take immediate steps to protect this historic structure, Pro-Savarkar supporters will launch a more intense agitation across Maharashtra.
