Union Government forms a committee to tackle challenges such as infiltration

Union Home Minister Amit Shah

New Delhi – Union Home Minister Amit Shah informed that a high-level committee has been constituted to investigate demographic imbalances and unnatural demographic changes in the country. The committee will analyse unusual population shifts on religious and social levels and suggest time-bound measures. By examining data from across the country, it will identify areas where the population has suddenly increased due to infiltrators. According to the Government, infiltration is altering the demographic structure in many parts of the country and poses a major security challenge.

Based on the committee’s findings, policies will be formulated to reduce the additional pressure on limited resources such as land, water, employment and ration supplies in areas experiencing sudden population growth. Based on the committee’s report, new laws may also be introduced in the future to strengthen border security, tighten citizenship rules and reinforce national security.

Supreme Court terms infiltration as “undeclared external aggression”

In the 2005 case Sarbananda Sonowal vs Union of India, the Supreme Court of India made strong observations while striking down an old law related to the identification of illegal migrants in Assam. The court stated that infiltration from Bangladesh into Assam had affected the lives of the state’s citizens and was akin to “undeclared external aggression.”
