Restrict the use of loudspeakers during Azaan! Assam MLA Diganta Kalita

Demand by Assam’s newly elected BJP MLA Diganta Kalita

(Azaan refers to the Islamic call inviting Muslims to offer Namaz through loud public recitation.)

Guwahati (Assam) – Newly elected BJP MLA Diganta Kalita has demanded restrictions on the use of loudspeakers during Azaan.

He stated

That he has been residing in the MLA quarters for the past five years. Azaan is broadcast over loudspeakers five times a day from dawn till evening from a nearby mosque. He said the high volume causes considerable inconvenience to the residents there. Kalita added that he is thoroughly studying court rulings and legal provisions related to the matter and will soon place the entire issue before the Assam government. Faith has its place, but loudspeakers are not necessary for it. The inconvenience caused to others by this should be stopped,” he said.

MLA Kalita clarified that he is not opposed to Azaan itself; his objection is only to the excessive sound from the loudspeakers.

Editorial Perspective

Why does this even need to be stated? Why does the government not take action against such loudspeakers?
