New Delhi – Results of the legislative assembly elections held in five states—Assam, West Bengal, Puducherry, Tamil Nadu, and Kerala—were announced on 4 May. The Bharatiya Janata Party retained power in Assam and Puducherry. In West Bengal, it defeated Mamata Banerjee’s All India Trinamool Congress, which had been in power for the past 15 years, and formed the government there for the first time.

In Tamil Nadu, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam led by M. K. Stalin was defeated, while actor Joseph Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam secured a majority in its very first election. In Kerala, the Left Democratic Front was defeated, and the United Democratic Front led by the Indian National Congress gained a majority. This defeat marks the first time that communist parties are not in power in any state in the country.

Trinamool’s defeat was inevitable: Humayun Kabir

Humayun Kabir

Humayun Kabir, founder of the Am Janata Unnayan Party, congratulated the people of West Bengal for rejecting the Trinamool Congress. He accused Mamata Banerjee of looting the state and said the outcome was expected. He remarked that after becoming Chief Minister three times, she gave excessive power to her nephew and misled the public. He also alleged that in 15 years, the scale of alleged corruption exceeded what the British had done over 100–200 years.

Kabir had earlier been expelled from the Trinamool Congress over a controversy related to constructing Babri mosque in Murshidabad. He won from both Rejinagar and Nowda constituencies.

Violence in Asansol

In Asansol, a Trinamool Congress office was vandalised. Vehicles, chairs, and other items near the office were damaged. Verbal clashes between supporters of the BJP and Trinamool escalated into physical violence, leaving workers from both sides injured.

In the Jorhat constituency of Assam, Gaurav Gogoi, the state Congress president and Member of Parliament, was defeated. BJP candidate Hitendra Nath Goswami won by a margin of over 20,000 votes.

DMK faces setback in Tamil Nadu

In Tamil Nadu, the DMK faced a significant setback. Chief Minister M. K. Stalin lost in his constituency, while his son Udhayanidhi Stalin was also initially trailing before winning later. Out of 34 ministers in the DMK government, 31 were trailing. In 2023, Udhayanidhi Stalin had sparked controversy by comparing Sanatan Dharma to diseases like dengue and malaria, a remark later defended publicly by M. K. Stalin.

Editorial Perspective

The defeat of Mamata Banerjee in Bengal by Hindu voters is a significant political shift that could give a new direction to Hindutva-oriented politics in the country. This victory will help safeguard Hindus in West Bengal as well as the nation.
