- Villagers called for a shutdown in the village on 2 May while continuing their agitation. The protesters took an aggressive stand, saying, “Give the death penalty to this brute or hand him over to us; we will deal with him ourselves.”
- The victim had come to her grandmother’s house. She was playing outside the house, but when she was not seen for a long time, a search was initiated.
- During the search, her dead body was found lying in a suspicious condition inside a cowshed. As the news spread, villagers expressed anger and launched protests.
- The accused lured her to the cowshed by saying he would show her a calf, assaulted her, and then killed her by smashing her with a stone. The body was hidden under a heap of dung in the cowshed. CCTV footage from the village shows the accused taking her along.
- The accused Bhimaji Kamble had previously assaulted another girl and had been punished for it. Two serious offences are already registered against him at the Rajgad Police Station. Protesters questioned, “If the accused has confessed to the crime, what is the need for further investigation ?”
- To prevent any law and order disturbance after the incident, the police have deployed heavy security in the village. Senior officers of Pune Rural Police are closely monitoring the situation, and additional police force has been called in to prevent any untoward incident.
