Cooking using gas stored in balloons in Pakistan

Due to severe gas shortage, people are storing cooking gas in balloons

Karachi (Pakistan) – Amid a severe gas shortage in Pakistan, a shocking practice has emerged where people are filling plastic balloons with gas and using it for cooking. This dangerous method is reportedly being used in areas like Orangi Town and Mominabad in Karachi.

Residents say that due to the irregular gas supply, they are left with no alternative. When gas is supplied through pipelines for a short duration, people store it in specially made plastic balloons. The stored gas is then connected to a stove using a pipe for cooking. The cost of these balloons ranges between 1,000 to 1,500 Pakistani rupees.

“This is like a moving bomb!” – Experts warn

Experts have raised serious concerns, warning that such balloons are essentially “moving bombs.” According to safety analysts, gas-filled plastic balloons can explode at any moment due to friction, heat, or even a small spark. Storing such balloons inside homes poses a major fire hazard, and in densely populated areas, the consequences could be severe.
