Kolkata rape victim’s mother and BJP candidate Ratna Debnath abused by Trinamool Congress goons

Kolkata (Bengal) – Polling for the second phase of the Bengal Assembly elections was conducted on April 29 in a violent atmosphere. Although 91.66 per cent of citizens voted, incidents of assault were reported at several places. In Panihati, BJP candidate Ratna Debnath was subjected to mental harassment by Trinamool Congress goons. ‘Go back’ slogans were raised against her in protest. Debnath has alleged that Trinamool supporters also attacked her. She stated, “Trinamool Congress goons abused me and said, ‘You are running a business in your daughter’s name !’”

Ratna Debnath’s daughter was raped and brutally murdered 21 months ago, on August 9, 2024, at R.G. Kar Medical College. The incident had triggered outrage across India. Doctors had staged protests and taken out rallies at several places. Debnath has entered the electoral fray demanding justice for her daughter and has described this campaign as her ‘personal battle’.
