Maldives betrays India

Malé (Maldives) – The Chinese vessel Shi Yan 6, officially described as a research ship, arrived at the port of Malé on 24 April 2026, following its operations in the Indian Ocean region. This development takes place despite reported objections by India in similar instances. Notably, Maldives’ decision comes when India has extended financial support of ₹3,000 crore through a currency swap arrangement in April 2026, aimed at assisting  Maldives in managing its external debt obligations.

Maldives is currently experiencing economic challenges, including declining foreign exchange reserves and repayment pressures. Against this backdrop, its decision to allow a Chinese vessel through Sunda Strait, reportedly conducting a survey in sensitive regions such as the Ninety East Ridge; has drawn attention to China’s growing strategic foot hold in Maldives, which could be a threat to India’s regional maritime security.

Indian Naval Presence

According to the Indian Embassy in Malé, the Indian Naval ship INS Kalpeni has also reached Maldives and anchored at Addu Atoll. This visit underscores the ongoing defence cooperation and cordial relations between India and Maldives. It may also indicate efforts by the Maldivian government to maintain a balanced engagement with multiple partners. However, the repeated entry of Chinese surveillance vessels into the Indian Ocean and Maldives allowing them access could pose a threat to India’s national security in the future.

Nature of the Vessel

While China maintains that Shi Yan 6 is engaged in scientific research, it is widely regarded by analysts as a “dual use” platform capable of collecting oceanographic data, including seabed mapping and current patterns. Such data can have potential military operations by China, particularly docking submarine secretly near Indian territory.

Editorial Perspective

  • Despite receiving financial assistance amounting to ₹3,000 crore from India, Maldives has permitted the docking of a Chinese vessel identified as Shi Yan 6, which has raised strategic and security concerns.
  • When will India’s suicidal ‘Gandhigiri’ stop ? Afghanistan, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Male, all these Islamic counties will remain anti-India, as, for them India is ‘Kafir’,  which they aim to turn into an Islamic country. They can never be sincere with India and Hindus. When will we realise this truth and stop being self-destructive in the name of so-called diplomacy ?
