Khasi Students’ Union shuts down alleged illegal mosque in Shillong (Meghalaya)

Shillong (Meghalaya) – Tension arose in the Lower Lumparing area of the capital Shillong after the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) shut down an alleged illegal mosque on 14 April 2026. Several local residents supported the action, stating that unauthorised constructions should be addressed and resolved through lawful and peaceful means.

According to the student organisation, the mosque had been constructed without obtaining permission from the local administration or traditional authorities. The organisation also claimed that the land was originally allotted for the residence of a caretaker of a nearby burial ground, but was later used to construct the mosque without following due process.

No action despite notice from the administration

The organisation stated that the local administration had issued a notice for removal of the structure; however, no action was taken. As a result, the union intervened and shut down the premises. Members of the organisation also asked the imam to vacate the site immediately, stating that his stay there was unauthorised and that no religious activities should be conducted at the location.

The organisation further emphasised that laws and traditional systems applicable to tribal areas in Meghalaya must be strictly followed.

Editorial Perspective

If the administration fails to enforce the law in a timely manner, does it not create conditions for public intervention and unrest ? If such inaction continues across regions, it may lead to similar situations emerging elsewhere in the country.
