If re-elected, we will bring a law to expel ‘Miya Muslims’ from Assam within 24 hours: Himanta Biswa Sarma

Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma’s assurance

Assam’s Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma

Guwahati (Assam) – Himanta Biswa Sarma stated that if the BJP government returns to power for a third term, the ‘Immigrants (Expulsion from Assam) Act, 1950’ will be implemented to remove migrants from Assam. (Under this law, district magistrates are empowered to expel illegal immigrants within 24 hours.) He also said that the campaign against encroachments by Bangladeshi “Miya” Muslims will be intensified and that they will not be allowed to retain even an inch of land. He assured that within the next five years, his government will completely curb the influence of Bangladeshi “Miya” Muslims.

The use of the term “Miya Muslims” by Sarma has been criticised by the Congress party. Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi said that such language during elections goes against democratic values.

Announcement to implement Uniform Civil Code

The BJP manifesto includes a promise to implement a Uniform Civil Code. Sarma claimed that it would be implemented within three months of coming to power. However, tribal areas covered under the Sixth Schedule will be excluded. According to the government, this step is necessary to curb “love jihad” and “land jihad.”

Renewed promise of a ‘flood-free Assam’

The BJP has once again promised to make Assam flood-free within the next five years. For this, a plan has been made to spend ₹18,000 crore in the first two years.
