Ban on illegal online betting in Nepal

Kathmandu (Nepal) — Nepal’s Telecommunications Authority has imposed a ban on illegal online betting. In a meeting chaired by the Communications Minister, a decision was taken to block 281 betting apps and websites, and the order has been implemented. The move is said, has been taken to protect Nepal’s economy and to prevent youth from falling into the trap of gambling.

The Nepal government’s strict action has impacted betting syndicates operating across the border through gambling and illegal digital betting networks. Online betting networks are often linked across multiple countries and operate through various channels. According to sources, due to the open border between India and Nepal, betting gangs had long been active in border areas, running their operations through both online and offline (physical) means. Large-scale transactions worth crores of rupees were being conducted through betting activities in homes and even in agricultural fields. Hawala networks and digital payment systems were also being used.

With increasing coordination between the security agencies of both countries, these networks are weakening. As a result, betting operators are either shifting their bases or suspending their activities.

Although the Nepal government has taken strict measures, there are concerns that betting operators may adopt new methods and attempt to become active again.

Editorial Perspective

Currently in India there is no nationwide law to curb online betting. We too need to take strict action against this issue.
