Villagers warn of indefinite hunger strike if action is not taken against the contractor

Case of removal of the Vetal idol shrine in Khopoli

Khopoli (Raigad, Maharashtra) – A contractor allegedly removed the Vetal idol shrine near Lowjee village in Khopoli using a JCB machine. Angered by the incident, villagers staged a protest march to the Khopoli Municipal Council office. A memorandum was submitted to Municipal President Kuldeep Shende demanding that the contractor’s work be stopped and strict legal action be taken against him. The villagers also warned that if the administration does not deliver immediate justice in this matter, they will go on an indefinite hunger strike. Leveling work was underway for additional land belonging to a steel factory near the village, during which the contractor carried out the above act.

Residents also demanded that at least 2 gunthas (242 square yards) of land be allocated for the shrine. They further alleged that the contractor filled up a natural water channel (stream) and a pond. Due to this, there is a possibility of flooding during the monsoon season.

Editorial Perspective

  • Such incidents of removing places of worship belonging to other religions do not occur, because there is fear of how strongly those communities might react. However, since Hindus are tolerant, their places of worship are frequently disrespected.
  • It is a positive sign that Hindus have become aware after this incident, but to prevent such occurrences, they must establish a strong stature.
  • Immediate action should be taken against the contractor responsible for this arbitrary act.
