Navasamvatsar, that is Gudhi Padwa, marks the Hindu New Year (19th March 2026). On this auspicious day, let us understand more about the commencement of the New Year.
Presented here are common questions about Gudhi Padwa and the responses of Mr Ramesh Shinde.

The ritual of the Day
The primary act of this day is hoisting the Gudhi (Pole) and worshipping it ritualistically. On the day of Pratipada (First day in a Hindu lunar fortnight) of the first lunar month of Chaitra, before sunrise, the entrance of the house should be cleansed and decorated with rangoli. The Gudhi should be erected on the right side of the entrance. A beautiful rangoli should be drawn in front of it.
For hoisting the Gudhi, the following materials are required – A bamboo staff, a garland of sugar crystals, a green or yellow silk cloth with brocade border, mango leaves, neem leaves or a neem twig with blossoms, a wooden platform, a kalash (A metal pot with a large base and small mouth) and regular Puja materials.
Method of hoisting the Gudhi
1. Tie the green or yellow brocade bordered cloth to the top of the tall bamboo stick, making proper folds while tying.
2. Over the cloth, tie tender neem leaves or a twig with blossoms, along with mango leaves. Then tie the garland of sugar crystals, followed by a garland of red flowers.
3. Draw a Swastik on the kalash using wet kumkum (Red powder made from turmeric) and place it inverted on the top of the bamboo stick. Decorate the Gudhi in this manner and place it upright on a small wooden platform.
4. Worship the Gudhi with a resolve, by pronouncing ‘Brahmadhwajaya Namaha (Obeisance to the flag of Brahma)’. Offer haldi (Turmeric powder), then kumkum. Offer akshata (Unbroken rice grains, usually smeared with kumkum and flowers), wave incense and perform Arati with an oil lamp.
5. After worship, pray as follows : ‘O’ Brahmadev, O’ Vishnu ! Through this Gudhi may we be able to absorb the Prajapati, Surya and sattvik (Spiritually pure) waves present in the environment. May the Chaitanya (Divine consciousness) within the Shakti (Divine Energy) obtained from them remain constantly active. May the Shakti I obtain be utilised solely for spiritual practice. This is my prayer at Your Holy Feet.’
Thereafter, offer neem leaves as Naivedya.
Spiritual significance
The Gudhi symbolises victory. The residents of Ayodhya welcomed Prabhu Shriram by hoisting Gudhis after His return following the slaying of Ravan. Another important act to be performed on this day is Panchang shravan (Listening to the reading of the New Year Almanac). A new Panchang should be brought and heard. Panchang shravan bestows the merit equivalent to bathing in the Ganga. Another important act is consuming neem Prasad. Let us understand how this Prasad is prepared.
Ingredients for the Prasad : Neem blossoms and tender leaves, soaked gram or soaked chickpeas, honey, cumin and asafoetida.
Method of preparation : Grind neem blossoms and 10-12 tender leaves, 4 teaspoons soaked gram or chickpeas, 1 teaspoon honey, 1 teaspoon cumin, asafoetida and salt to taste.
Distribute this Prasad to all.
Neem has the highest capacity to absorb Prajapati waves; hence, this Prasad is consumed. On this day, farmers should plough their fields. Ploughing turns the lower layer of soil upward, enabling it to absorb Prajapati waves, thus increasing its capacity for seed germination. Agricultural tools and bullocks should be offered sanctified akshata. New clothes should be given to farm workers and charity work should be done. Listen to Holy songs and perform blissful activities.
Lowering the Gudhi
At sunset, the Gudhi should be lowered promptly. The same devotional sentiment with which it was erected should be maintained while lowering it, as this bestows Chaitanya. The head of the family should offer haldi and kumkum to the Gudhi and pay obeisance to it. Jaggery or sweets should be offered as Naivedya. Then all should pray thus –
‘O’ Brahmadev ! O’ Vishnu ! May the Shakti accumulated in this Gudhi throughout the day be bestowed upon me. May this Shakti be utilised for serving the Nation & Dharma. This is my prayer at Your Holy Feet.’ Lower the Gudhi after this prayer. Preserve the offered items respectfully. Flowers and mango leaves should be immersed in flowing water.
New Year greeting cards should ideally be sent on Chaitra Shukla Pratipada, since this is the true beginning of the New Year.

Why is the Hindu New Year on Chaitra Shukla Pratipada ?
A. Natural : Towards the first day of Chaitra, the Sun assumes a position above the Vasant intersection (the point of intersection of the Equator and the Meridians) and the spring season commences. In Shrimadbhagawadgeeta (10.35), Shrikrushna says – ‘Amongst the seasons, the exhilarating Vasant-rutu (Spring) is my manifestation’.
B. Historical : On this day
1. Prabhu Shriram killed Vali.
2. Shakas gained victory over the Huns.
3. This is the commencement of the ‘Shalivahanshaka’, when King Shalivahan vanquished his enemies.
C. Spiritual
1. Creation of the Universe : Deity Brahma created the Universe on this day, that marked the commencement of Satyayug.
2. One among the three and a half muhurts (Auspicious times) : Gudhi Padwa, Akshayya Trutiya and Dushehra each make up one, and the first day of the Hindu lunar month of Kartik comprises one-half of the total three and a half muhurts. The special feature of these muhurts is that unlike other days, when one has to select an auspicious moment to perform a ritual, on these days one does not need to, as every moment of these days is auspicious.
