Mumbai, 10 March – The number of accidents involving buses of the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation during the past seven and a half years is alarming. From 2018–19 to November 2025, a total of 10,505 accidents involving ST buses occurred across the State. In these accidents, 2,273 people lost their lives. The Transport Department gave this written reply to a starred question raised by BJP MLA Babanrao Lonikar on 10 March. The issue, however, was not discussed in the House.
Of these, 1,884 accidents were fatal, while 8,621 were of a serious nature. The deceased included 199 passengers, 56 corporation employees, 494 pedestrians and 1,524 other persons. The corporation stated that old and damaged vehicles, technical faults, inadequate driver training or poor roads were not the main causes of the accidents; however, the exact reasons for the accidents were not specified in the reply. The corporation also stated that drivers are being given regular training to reduce the number of accidents.
