Pune – Incidents of minor girls being lured and abducted in the city have taken a serious turn. Between 1 and 15 February, 20 cases of kidnapping of minor girls were reported. Most of the girls are between 13 and 17 years of age.

Acquaintances formed through social media, inducements of love, promises of marriage, and involvement of known individuals have emerged as the primary reasons behind these incidents. In several such cases, minor girls are allegedly enticed into relationships and subsequently subjected to physical exploitation. On 14 February, ‘Valentine’s Day’, three minor girls reportedly left their homes.

Such incidents have been reported from areas including Nanded City, Sahakarnagar, Bibwewadi, Swargate, Kalepadal, Wagholi, Lonikand, Katraj, Warje Malwadi, Yewalewadi, Chandan Nagar, Baner, Kothrud, Vishrambaug, Bharati Vidyapeeth area, Mundhwa, Alankar Police Station limits, Kharadi and Chatushrungi.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime Branch) Nikhil Pingale stated that cases of emotional manipulation and ‘sextortion’ — in which private or obscene photographs or videos are used to blackmail individuals for money, sexual favours or other demands — are on the rise. He emphasised that it is essential for parents to remain vigilant about their children’s mobile phone usage and to maintain open communication with them.

Editorial Perspectives

  • These incidents are the consequences of celebrating ‘Valentine’s Day’ and of failing to instil proper values in girls from a young age.
  • The blind imitation of Western culture in several aspects of life has resulted in children losing the ability to distinguish between right and wrong, which is a matter of serious concern.
