A Hindu man committed suicide in the police station at Madurai (Tamil Nadu)

He took the fatal step after the Tamil Nadu DMK Government denied permission to light the lamp on the Thiruparankundram hill, despite the High Court order.

Madurai (Tamil Nadu) – Here, a 40-year-old man named Poorna Chandran first stopped his vehicle near the statue of Periyar, then entered the nearby police station and set himself on ablaze and died. Soon after the incident, an audio recording of Poorna Chandran went viral on social media.  Chandran had recorded the audio before his death. In it, he mentioned that he was extremely distressed due to the Government’s denial of permission to light a lamp on the Thiruparankundram hill. He also stated that he decided to set himself ablaze in the city and not on the hill, to avoid violating the sanctity of the temple.

What is the case?

Thiruparankundram hill in Tamil Nadu is considered to be one of the six Holy places of Bhagvan Murugan. There has been a long-standing dispute over the tradition of lighting the Kartikeya lamp at the lamp-pillar (Deepastambha) every year. The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court had directed that the lamp be lit on the Deepastambha on 1 December 2025; however, the state Government refused permission on the pretext of law and order and tradition. Actually, the opposition to lighting the lamp at Deepastambha is because there is a dargah on the hill.

Poorna Chandran was a regular visitor to religious places. He did not wish to defame the temple. He lost hope when the Government failed to implement the Court Order. The family had no idea about his intentions. He is survived by his wife and two small children He was a medical representative.

BJP’s criticism of the DMK Government

Tamil Nadu BJP president Nainar Nagendran and leader K. Annamalai have called it as the result of the anti-Hindu policies of the DMK government. However, they have appealed to the devotees to maintain peace and to have faith in the judiciary.

Editorial Perspectives

This is not a suicide but a murder by the DMK Government. A case should be registered against the government and action should be against Chief Minister Stalin for this. Hindus and their organisations should exert pressure.

Committing suicide in any incident or situation is an inappropriate act. According to Hindu scriptures, committing suicide is wrong. Hindus indulge in such acts because they lack education about Dharma.
