Devbhoomi Sangharsh Samiti to hold major agitation today

Demanding demolition of unauthorised Sanjauli Mosque, Shimla Himachal Pradesh

Shimla (Himachal Pradesh) – The Devbhoomi Sangharsh Samiti has called for a protest on 21 November, demanding that authorities seal the unauthorized mosque in the Sanjauli area. According to the committee, the court had ruled the construction illegal and directed the administration to take action; however, they allege that no steps have been taken so far.

Members of the committee have been on a sit-in protest near the Sanjauli Police Post since 18 November, demanding that complaints registered against them be withdrawn. These complaints were reportedly filed after they attempted to stop the offering of namaz at the site last week. The committee has also demanded disconnection of electricity and water supply to the mosque.

Committee co-convener Vijay Sharma stated that a strategy meeting was held on the evening of 19 November, after which they decided to hold a large protest on 21 November to press their demands. Sharma appealed to parents not to send their children to school on the day of the protest, so they do not face difficulties. He said roads in Sanjauli would remain closed on 21 November. Office-bearers of various organisations and local residents are expected to participate.

The committee claims that, since the court has declared the mosque structure illegal, no religious activities should be conducted there. The committee further alleges that despite the court’s direction to demolish the illegal construction, the administration has not taken action; instead, cases have been registered against committee members. Sharma said the upcoming demonstration on 21 November would be even larger than the protest held on 11 September last year, during which 10 people were injured in clashes.
