Exodus of Bangladeshi Muslims from India

Outcome of special in-depth re-examination (SIR)

Kolkata (Bengal) –  The process of special in-depth re-examination has been started in twelve States in the country, and several Bangladeshi Muslim infiltrators have started running away from India. A large number of such infiltrators are seen returning to Bangladesh, near the Bengal border. These infiltrators have no proper proof of Indian citizenship; therefore, they have started leaving India.

Illegal migrants stuck on the border

More than 500 illegal migrants are stuck near the Hakimpur border of Bengal. Most of them were staying in and around Kolkata and were working as labourers or doing domestic chores. Now, the Bangladeshi illegal migrant families are worried about getting caught in the absence of proper papers. This fear is taking them towards Bangladesh. One person informed that he was scared as the re-examination started and immediately shifted to the Indo-Bangladesh border. One woman stated that she had been working for more than ten years as a domestic help without any legal papers of Indian citizenship. Now, she wanted to return to Satkhira (Bangladesh). Border Security Force (BSF) has termed it a reverse migration. BSF tries to stop illegal migrants from entering India. The Bangladesh security force is, however, not allowing them to enter that country; therefore, hundreds of Bangladeshi illegal migrants are stuck on the Bangladesh border. (Indian Government needs to have immediate discussions with Bangladesh and take steps to send back these illegal migrants; else it can cause tension on the borders. – Editor).

More than 12,000 illegal migrants have been detained

As per the BSF sources, the number of people trying to run away to Bangladesh has gone up considerably since the announcement of re-examination. In the last three months, BSF has caught more than 12000 Bangladeshi illegal migrants from the Bangladesh border. (If the Indian administration is failing in deporting illegal migrants, and if they are going back due to the re-examination policy, what is the use of detaining them and unnecessarily feeding and looking after them? – Editor)

Editorial Perspective

People feel that the Government and Administration should ensure that the deported infiltrators don’t return.
