Dhaka (Bangladesh) – Trina Roy Chowdhury, a Hindu woman journalist who has been reporting on the attacks against Hindus during Bangladesh’s interim government period, has received threats of gang rape from radical Muslims. Earlier, her husband, journalist Promithias Chowdhury, was attacked. Following these incidents, journalists across Bangladesh staged protests demanding strict action, yet the police remain inactive.

1. Promithias Chowdhury and his wife Trina run a news website named The News Dot Com. Promithias is the editor and publisher, while Trina serves as the chief correspondent. The couple lives in West Goil village in Barisal district, around 150 km from Dhaka. They have also founded an ashram named Anandalok, which offers support to local Hindus.

2. Trina explained that they frequently face arguments with local extremists; however, on October 29th, matters escalated into physical assault and rape threats. That afternoon, her husband was called to a shop by Nazim Mullah, an old classmate. Assuming it to be casual conversation, he went there, only to find Nazim and Shahin quarrelling over money. They dragged Promithias into the dispute, accusing him of owing them money and calling him a member of ISKCON. They shouted, beat him, and declared, “You are a kafir Hindu. How can you be our friend? This country belongs to us. You are allowed to stay here only out of mercy. Leave this land.”

3. They further threatened, “Your wife is dangerous. We will have Muslim men gang rape her, and then she will understand who we are.”

Police bias exposed

Trina stated, “We filed a complaint on October 29th, but there has been no action. Instead, we are being threatened. The police officer in charge is a Muslim, and he is pressuring us instead of the culprits.”

When they mentioned ISKCON in their complaint, the officer said, “Remove that word, or a riot will break out.” He even warned, “We can file a case against you instead, claiming you were gathering people to demolish a mosque.”

Trina added that staying in Bangladesh has now become unsafe for them. In recent months, attacks, rapes, and murders targeting Hindus and other minorities have increased sharply, pushing the Hindu community into a worsening state of fear and helplessness.

Editorial Perspective

The condition of Hindus in Bangladesh has become so dire that the fact they have not yet been physically assaulted is itself considered a ‘relief.’ The real shame is that there is no one to protect them or change this situation.
