“A conspiracy to restore monarchy under the pretext of military mediation” : Nepali social organization

Claim by a Nepali social organization !

Kathmandu (Nepal) – A civil society organization in Nepal has alleged that “under the guise of military mediation, a conspiracy is underway to reinstate monarchy in Nepal.” Discussions are ongoing about the formation of an interim government after the fall of the K.P. Sharma Oli administration. However, “Brihat Nagarik Andolan” (Grand Citizens’ Movement), a social organization representing various regions, has claimed that a plot is being hatched to restore monarchy; effectively re-establishing Nepal as a Hindu nation.

According to local media reports, Brihat Nagarik Andolan alleged that “using the martyrdom of the youth movement as an excuse, and in the name of military mediation, there is a grave plot to end secularism, federalism, and inclusive governance, and to reinstate monarchy.” These attempts, it said, are utterly unacceptable. The movement emphasized that the aim of anti-government protests was never to dismantle republicanism or secularism, nor to expand unconstitutional military involvement in politics.

Background of Nepal’s political system

In 2008, monarchy in Nepal was abolished. In 2015, Nepal adopted a constitution declaring itself a secular democratic republic. Until then, Nepal had been for decades the world’s only Hindu nation. During the constitution-writing process, millions of Hindus took to the streets demanding that Nepal be constitutionally recognized as a Hindu nation. Many even undertook indefinite fasts. Several surveys reported that more than 90% of Nepalis supported the idea of a Hindu state. Even some Muslim organizations had publicly declared: “If Nepal remains a Hindu nation, only then will we feel secure.”

The political party Rastriya Prajatantra Party – Nepal also championed this demand. However, the Congress, Communists, and other political forces deliberately ignored it. Eventually, under international pressure from the U.S., the European Union, and China; who allegedly orchestrated the change; Nepal was declared a secular state.

Editorial Perspective

In Nepal, the demand for declaring a Hindu Nation, i.e., the restoration of monarchy, has been voiced by more than 90% of the population. Several reports have highlighted this repeatedly. Yet, for over a decade, this popular demand has never been honoured. That itself is the conspiracy; and the reality!
