Peace in Manipur : The Kuki-Zo Council opens National Highway-2

Imphal/New Delhi – The path to peace has been opened in Manipur. The Kuki-Zo Council, representing a section of the Kuki and Zomi tribes in the state, has decided to open the National Highway-2, which is considered the lifeline of the State, for the free movement of passengers and goods. There is talk that Prime Minister Narendra Modi would visit Manipur soon. In this backdrop, the Kuki-Zo Council signed an agreement with the Union Government. The Union Home Ministry confirmed it in a statement issued recently. In the tripartite agreement signed between the Kuki rebel group and the Union and State Governments, there was an agreement on the need to find a negotiated solution to bring permanent peace and stability to Manipur. The agreement stated that the refugee camps would be moved away from dangerous areas. In the last few days, discussions were going on between the Home Ministry and the Kuki-Zo Council about the terms and conditions. President’s rule has been imposed in Manipur. The assembly was adjourned last February after N. Biren Singh stepped down as CM.
