Thiruvananthapuram (Kerala) – Kerala Governor Rajendra Arlekar issued official instructions to all government universities in the state to observe August 14 as Partition Horrors Remembrance Day. This has sparked political controversy in the state. The ruling Communist Party, as well as the opposition Congress, lashed out at the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), accusing the Governor of running a parallel administration.
1. In the circular issued by the Governor, it is stated: “Organize seminars and memorial events highlighting the pain of India’s Partition. Vice-chancellors should submit an action plan on how they will organize this day.”

2. On this, Kerala’s Minister for General Education, V. Sivankutty, said, “This is an attempt to run a parallel administration. Which Partition is the Governor referring to? The RSS, which had no role in the freedom struggle, worked to divide society. The Governor is echoing that ideology.”
3. Leader of the Opposition and Congress MLA V.D. Satheesan also criticized the Governor’s actions, saying, “The Governor is acting not as the constitutional head but as a spokesperson for the RSS’s divisive politics.”
Editorial PerspectiveOpposing a day that is observed to make the present generation aware of the immense sufferings endured by Hindus due to Partition is, in a way, supporting the Muslim-led division of the country. Such political parties should have their recognition revoked. |
