In 2023, rise in noise pollution during Ganesh Festival while reduction in pollution in Diwali

(Editorial Perspective : Why such observation is made only during Hindu festivals and not during the festivals of non-Hindus ?)

As per the report, in 2023, noise pollution increased during Ganesh festival due to the playing of musical instruments, bursting crackers and traffic jams. In Diwali, it was observed that the noise pollution was reduced in the jurisdiction of 29 municipal corporations.

Mr Sachin Kaulkar,

In 2023, checking of environmental and sound pollution was carried out during Ganesh festival at 132 places under the jurisdiction of 27 municipal corporations in Maharashtra. During the five days of the Ganesh festival in September, music is played continuously and there is a gathering of people. The checking was done during 6.00 p.m. -12.00 midnight when the sound level was increased. The highest increase in sound level was observed on 28.09.2023 which was the last day of Ganesh festival due to playing of music, drums, DJs, and band etc by many public Ganesh festival committees. It was observed that in many cities like Nashik, Bhiwandi, Pune and Chandrapur, the sound level was less compared to 2022 and the maximum reduction in sound level was noted in Panvel. The decrease in sound level in Mumbai was hardly noticeable, barring little decrease in sound in an area viz. Chinchpokli, East.

Reduction in noise pollution in Diwali !

In 2023, sound levels were checked in 158 places under the jurisdiction of 29 municipal corporations in Maharashtra. The checking was conducted in Diwali for three days including residential, commercial and assigned peace- areas. It was observed that though the average sound levels were more than the recommended standards, they were less compared to the last year. This reduction is due to the awareness created and efforts of the voluntary organisations and people. It is also due to the noiseless crackers used in Diwali. The overall effect of all the measures, therefore, shows the necessity for continuous efforts to maintain balance in celebrating cultural festivals and reducing environmental problems.
