Maldivian President Muizzu’s Brother-in-law calls Prime Minister Modi a ‘Terrorist’

Vile comments over Modi’s Maldives visit

Leaders of the Salafi Jamaat Sheikh Abdullah bin Muhammad Ibrahim and India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi

New Delhi – Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to visit Maldives on 25th and 26th of July. Even before the visit, Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu’s brother-in-law and Salafi Jamiyat leader Sheikh Abdullah Bin Mohamed Ibrahim made baseless allegations, saying, “Prime Minister Narendra Modi is a terrorist. He demolished the Babri Masjid. He is an enemy of Islam. He has looted lands belonging to Muslims and turned Ahmedabad into a graveyard.” After facing widespread criticism, he deleted his post from social media. He also claimed that inviting Modi to the Maldives was a big mistake. Sheikh Abdullah is affiliated with an organization established by Muizzu’s wife, Sajida Mohamed.

Prime Minister Modi’s third visit to Maldives

Prime Minister Modi will arrive in  Maldives on 25th of July 25. On 26th of July , he will be the chief guest at the Independence Day celebrations held there. During the visit, he will also participate in bilateral discussions. This will be Modi’s third visit to the Maldives. The visit is expected to strengthen cooperation between the two countries on issues such as trade, maritime security, and climate change.

Following discussions with President Muizzu in October 2024, both countries have started working on a free trade agreement.

Editorial Perspectives

  • Muizzu’s silence about the vile comments made by his brother-in-law and  not acting against him, makes it look like he supports his brother-in-law’s remark.
  • Maldives has become a puppet in the hands of China. Its anti-India actions in recent months are well-known. Given this, there may be strategic reasons behind Modi’s visit; anyway, it is essential to bring the anti-India Maldives to heel.
