Mumbai, 18th July – Opposition MLAs from the Maha Vikas Aghadi submitted a memorandum to Governor C P Radhakrishnan at Raj Bhavan, demanding that the Maharashtra Special Public Safety Bill 2024 — already passed in both Houses of the Legislature — should not be approved in light of rising public opposition. They urged that the bill be returned to the state government for reconsideration. The memorandum was submitted in the name of Ambadas Danve, Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Council.
🧾 Public Safety Bill sparks Opposition meltdown!
Opposition urges Maharashtra Governor not to sign the Bill, citing “public outrage” – demands it be sent back for reconsideration.
But if the Bill targets anti-social elements, why is the Opposition so rattled?

This bill primarily aims to control Naxalite activities. Under its provisions, the government would have the power to detain individuals who are considered a threat to public or national security without filing any formal charges.
The memorandum includes the following points:
- Around 12,500 objections were received from citizens and various social organisations regarding the recommendations made by the Joint Committee that reviewed the bill. Of these, 9,500 explicitly demanded the bill be withdrawn. The government must review these objections and hold a public hearing on the matter.
- Before the bill was tabled on 11th July, the opposition had submitted a dissent note highlighting the bill’s flaws and its possible adverse effects on common citizens. This note should be given due consideration.
- In light of the concerns raised by opposition members and the growing unrest among the public, the bill should not be approved in its current form and should be returned to the state government for further examination.
