Kabul (Afghanistan) – Russia has officially recognized the Taliban government in Afghanistan. The announcement was made after a meeting between Afghan Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaki and Russian Ambassador to Afghanistan Dmitry Zhirnov. This makes Russia the first country in the world to recognize the Taliban government. The Taliban calls itself ‘the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan’.

1. Muttaki said this bold decision would set an example for others. Now the process of getting approval has started.

2. Russia’s Foreign Ministry also issued a statement saying that the recognition of the Government of the Islamic Emirate will accelerate bilateral cooperation between the two countries.

3. Several countries, such as China, Pakistan and Iran, have deployed Taliban ambassadors to their countries; but so far, no one has officially recognized the Taliban regime.

4. On August 15, 2021, the Taliban took control of Kabul and all of Afghanistan. So far, no country, including India, has recognised the Taliban as the government of Afghanistan. Afghanistan continues to seek the world’s recognition.

Editorial Perspective

Although Russia has recognized the Taliban government due to world politics; given the Taliban rule, India should follow suit and should never recognize it !
