Muslim leader slams International Yoga Day, calls Surya Namaskar ‘Haram’ : Sparks backlash

Bareilly (Uttar Pradesh) – Maulana Shahabuddin Razvi, President of the All India Muslim Jamaat, stirred controversy on International Yoga Day by stating that while men and women should practise yoga—even in madarasas and mosques—Surya Namaskar is strictly forbidden (haram) under Islamic law. “It involves bowing to the sun, which is a Hindu practice and considered unlawful in Islam,” he claimed.

In response, Uttar Pradesh’s Cooperative Minister J.P.S. Rathore criticized the remark, calling it “the most narrow-minded thinking possible.” He added, “Just as the sun is a reality, so is Surya Namaskar. Sadly, a new controversy emerges every Yoga Day, even if many choose to ignore it.”
