Muslim workers gain access to the sacred platform of Shani Shingnapur temple

Maharashtra Mandir Mahasangh demands the removal of 300 Muslim workers to preserve the temple’s sanctity

Ahilyanagar – On 21st May, Muslim workers were engaged in installing a grill on the sacred platform of the Shri Shani Shingnapur temple, a site of immense reverence for millions of Hindus. This incident has deeply disturbed the local community, as it is seen as a violation of the temple’s sanctity and religious traditions. The Maharashtra Mandir Mahasangh has strongly condemned the act.

Sunil Ghanwat, the national organiser of the Mahasangh, stated that the work assigned to the Muslim workers should be halted immediately. He demanded the removal of approximately 300 Muslim workers currently employed at the temple and called for a thorough investigation into the officials who permitted their entry, followed by strict action. He warned that failure to address the issue would lead to widespread public protests across the state.

Mr Ghanwat further elaborated:

1. Assigning work within a sacred temple to individuals from other religions who consume non-vegetarian food is a significant affront to the faith and traditions of the Hindu community. Currently, around 300 Muslim workers are employed within the temple premises, which directly impacts the temple’s religious purity and traditions.

2. The Maharashtra Mandir Mahasangh has contacted the temple trustees, demanding an immediate cessation of such work. The trustees have reportedly agreed to halt the activities. Nonetheless, it is imperative to take action against the officials who authorised the work and appointed the Muslim workers.

3. In Andhra Pradesh, following a similar incident at the Tirupati Balaji temple, Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu ordered that only Hindu workers be employed. The Maharashtra Government should adopt a similar firm stance.

4. The conduct, diet, faith, and sentiments of individuals working within Hindu temples must align with the sanctity of the place. Appointing workers from other religions who do not adhere to these principles undermines the temple’s religious purity and traditions. The Government must take this matter seriously.

Editorial Perspectives

  • The repercussions of the Government’s control and secularisation of Hindu temples are becoming evident.
  • Repeated violations of religious practices are occurring within Hindu places of worship. Engaging Muslim workers, who may consume beef or other non-vegetarian food, to work within the sanctum of a revered temple like Shani Shingnapur is a mockery of Hindu Dharma and faith. Devotees believe that the temple administration should immediately suspend the responsible officials and take appropriate action.
  • Why is such a demand necessary? With a pro-Hindu Government in power, it is expected that they would proactively address such issues, reflecting the sentiments of devout Hindus.
  • For Muslims, Hindu Deities and temples are considered ‘haram’. Given their known stance towards Deities, it is perplexing why Hindu temples permit such workers within the premises.
